Are police reports public record in New Jersey? ›

Who can access arrest records depends on the details and type of charges. As a general rule, most arrest records are available to the public. However, this can vary from state to state. The New Jersey Open Public Records Act means that most arrest records are available to anyone in the state.

While police reports are generally considered public records, there are numerous exceptions and complexities that come into play. Factors such as ongoing investigations, privacy concerns, and sensitive information can all impact the availability and accessibility of police reports.

In police terminology, a beat is the territory and time that a police officer patrols. An uncertified copy of your police report can be retrieved online for $13, by credit or debit card only. You will be asked to provide either the case number, the license plate number, the driver's license number, or the last name of the person involved.

You may get a copy of your record by submitting a written request to the CJIS Division. The request must include proof of identity. This proof must include your name, date and place of birth, and a set of rolled-inked fingerprints (which can usually be obtained at your local police department).
