This job is hard work today because I have watched the news specials and talk shows since Saturday in an effort to bring you an uji to thc moment picture of where we stand on the impeach ment affair The first thing that must be reported is that end of the world announcements by politicians are not always to be taken seri ously Numerous public officials suggested that a vote by the House to pass along articles of impeachment would result in great damage to our nation's heart and soul What instead happened was the Demo crats adjourned to the party green for some finger sandwiches and punch and reminiscing leaving the Republicans to hang back in the shadows looking guilty Concerning the televised coverage of na tional issues it has become very difficult to come in on the middle of certain pre sentations and tell news from opinion Over the course of the weekend's his toric events coverage beyond animation was pretty hard to tag as either fact or fiction Parsing sentence It has become obvious that in a trial a consid erable portion of the defense would rest on the defi nition of definition it would rely on seman tics People have been kicked out of school because of grammar But never out of of fice Given the presence of all news talk and opinion television net works many of the programs have come to resemble mock trials with the Republi cans and Democrats running out their best arguments to see how they might play with the public One such practice run concerned an aspect of a perjury charge dealing with the cpiestion of whether or not the presi dent recalled being alone with his female friend on several occasions with the defi nition of alone coming seriously into play here Alone in the office? Alone in the building? Alone in the spiritual sense? Preparing a defense for a misunder standing of the word alone is not some thing many attorneys might want to deal with before at least a triple double on the rocks The most repeated mock debate on the talk shows concerns what the trial would be all about sex or crimes Here is the manner in which this prac tice fight progressed over the weekend: Democrat: about private sex Republican: It's about lying under oath Democrat: But the investigation was about private sex Impeachment party The Got Your Impeachment Article Right Here Par over on the lawn seems to have upped the ante for compromise in certain circles If the people are going to party around over being impeached one could only imagine the gala that would accompany censure They might dance all night the sound track of Big Chill" turned up to 9 on the volume dial Hie man is probably going to have to say something new in order to earn a censure from his opponents who enjoy watching Impeachment Bandstand the other day Saying
